Module #4 Phrasal verbs

A funny way to start a lesson. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HolR6fMke3U

What comes to your mind when you hear...

Break down?

Come across?

Give up?

Phrasal verbs

Phrasal Phrasal verbs are usually two-word phrases consisting of verb + adverb or verb + preposition. Study them as you come across them, rather than trying to memorize many at once. Like many other verbs, phrasal verbs often have more than one meaning.

1. We often use out/off/up with verbs of movement: for example

The bus was full. We couldn´t get on
She got into the car and drove off
*Usually the second word gives an special meaning to the verb. for example
Look out. There is a car coming! (= be careful)

2. Sometimes a phrasal verb is followed by a preposition: for example

Why did you run away from me?
I am looking forward to my vacation?

3. Sometimes a phrasal verb has an object. Usually there are two positions for the object. So you can say:
                                                                                 object

I turned of the light                or            I turned the light off
                      object
